Knitted Skirt

Knit a skirt and vary the length — short or midi. The length is determined by the number of stitches cast on. For a knee–length skirt measuring approx 60cm (24 inches) cast on 80 stitches. Cast on 100 or 120 stitches for longer length skirts.

Knit Skirt 180 stitches creates a skirt length of approx 60cm.

Size: measure your hips and add 2.5cm (1 inch) to the finished measurement of the skirt. This allows you to adjust the size of the skirt to suit. There is one seam up the back of the skirt and an elasticated waist.

You will need:

2 100g balls of double knit yarn (or more for a longer/larger skirt).
Knitting needles size 6mm (UK 4. US 10).

Method:

Cast on 80 stitches (or more if required).
Knit rows of garter stitch until the work measures the size you need.
Bind off.

Sew the seam together with yarn using a mattress stitch or similar stitch.
Make the waistband. Fold a 2cm (3/4 inch) hem around the waist. (Fold it to the inside of the skirt).
Sew around the edge leaving a small gap to thread a piece of flat, narrow elastic through the gap. I used a safety pin to thread the elastic. Work out how much elastic you need by measuring your waist.
When you’ve threaded the elastic through, overlap the ends by 1.27cm (1/2 inch). This makes the elastic 2.5cm (1 inch) less than your waist measurement and provides a bit of stretch but a comfortable fit.

Knit Skirt 2

Sew the gap in the waist shut.
That’s the skirt complete.
