Lilac & Blue Scarf/Shawl

Lilac Blue Scarf 2

Knitted in lilac and two shades of blue, this gossamer texture is perfect for scarves and shawls. It’s light as air and suitable for those who can knit stocking stitch. I used lovely lace weight yarn in lilac and blue tones.

One ball of this type of lace weight yarn is usually enough to knit a scarf. As this is knitted in three colours, you’ll have extra yarn available if you want to make the scarf longer or wider.

To make the scarf longer:

Simply knit the scarf pattern twice. The colours are designed so that this works well with the colour changes. You’ll finish the first time with the light blue, and then continue to knit with the lilac again, finishing a second time with the light blue.

Lilac Blue Scarf

To make a shawl:

Cast on twice as many stitches (80 stitches) and then follow the pattern using the same colour changes. This will create a lovely lightweight shawl to drape around the shoulders.

You will need:

1 25g ball lace weight yarn – lilac.
1 25g ball lace weight yarn – light blue.
1 25g ball lace weight yarn – dark blue.
Knitting needles size 6mm (UK 4. US 10).

Method:

Using the lilac yarn cast on 40 stitches.
Row 1 – knit.
Row 2 – knit 2, purl to the last 2 stitches, knit 2.
The scarf is worked in stocking stitch (1 row knit, 1 row purl). However, at the beginning and end of each purl row you should knit the first and last 2 stitches. You don’t have to do this, but it gives a consistent edging to the scarf.
Continue stocking stitch in lilac until the work measures 20cm (8 inches).
Change to light blue yarn (on a knit row). Knit 13cm (5 inches) stocking stitch light blue.
Change to dark blue (on a knit row). Knit 18cm (7 inches) stocking stitch dark blue.
Change to lilac (on a knit row). Knit 10cm (4 inches) stocking stitch lilac.
Change to dark blue (on a knit row). Knit 10cm (4 inches) stocking stitch dark blue.
Change to light blue (on a knit row). Knit 13cm (5 inches) stocking stitch light blue.
Bind off. (Bind off loosely).
