Knitted Radio Microphone

It was a cold and stormy night…

Should I continue working, writing another chapter of my latest book, or
should I knit a radio microphone?

Difficult choice. Sensible work or frivolity?

So, here’s how to knit a microphone.

Knitted Microphone

You will need:

Grey double knit yarn (I used grey with sparkle in it).
Black double knit yarn.
Metallic silver yarn.
Lightweight filler.
Knitting needles size 4.5mm (UK 7. US 7).
Too much time on your hands (optional).

Method:

Cast on 20 stitches using black yarn.
Knit 4 rows garter stitch (knit stitches, no purl).
Change to silver yarn. (Remember to change yarn colours on the same side of the knitting each time).
Knit 2 rows garter stitch silver.
Change to black yarn.
Knit 5.5cm (2 1/4 inches) garter stitch black.

Knit 4 rows garter stitch black.
Bind off.

With right sides together, fold the rectangle in two lengthways. Use black yarn and a knitters needle to sew the edges together, leaving a gap on the top for stuffing. (Taper the edge seam from halfway down to define the shape).
Turn right sides out.
Stuff with lightweight filler.
Sew the gap shut.

Make the microphone ball:

Cast on 5 stitches using the grey yarn.
Row 1 – KFB (knit through the front and back of each stitch). (You should have 10 stitches).
Row 2 – Knit garter stitch.
Row 3 – As row 1. (20).
Row 4 – Knit.
Row 5 – K1, KFB. Repeat across the row. (30).
Row 6–24 Knit.
Row 25 – K1, K2tog. Repeat to the end of the row. (20).
Row 26 – Knit.
Row 27 – K1, K2tog to the last 2 stitches, K2tog. (13).
Row 28 – Knit.
Row 29 – K1, K2tog to the last stitch, K1. (9).
Row 30 – Knit.
Row 31 – K2tog to the last stitch, K1. (5).
Bind off.

With right sides together, sew the ball together along the side seam using yarn. Sew the top together and pull the yarn to help gather the top.
Turn right sides out.
Stuff the ball with filler and sew the bottom gap shut, pulling the yarn to tighten and gather the ball shape.

Sew the ball to the top of the microphone.

When finished the microphone measures approximately 27cm x 9cm (10.5 inches x 3.5 inches).
